Virginia Beach Belles
The Virginia Beach Belles is a recreational and competitive group of
women rowers. Most of us are moms who had never rowed before we joined
the Belles. The team was established in June 2000 by Bill Evans, coach
of Cox High School Rowing Club. We are a part of the newly established
Virginia Beach Rowing
Club (VBRC).
When
Our rowing season is between March and Thanksgiving. We usually have a two
week try it period each spring for new rowers to try the sport and decide if
they would like to join. Experienced rowers are welcome to come row with us
and join at any time.
Practice Session Times for the Belles:
- Monday, Wednesday & Friday 9:00am - 12:00pm
We also row with VBRC:
- Tuesday afternoons at 5:00pm
- Thursday afternoons at 5:00pm
- Saturday mornings at 9:00am
Where
- The Belles row in the Lynnhaven River out of a backyard in
Thoroughgood in the mornings, and in Lake Whitehurst at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens with other
members of VBRC
in the evenings and on Saturday.
- To enter the Norfolk Botanical Gardens, you will need to pay the
normal admission ($6 for adults) if you are not an NBG member. It
would probably be better in the long run to become an NBG Member.
There are several levels of membership available, starting at $40 per
year for individuals. Details are available on their
website.
- A map to the Norfolk Botanical Gardens can be found on their
website
- The shells are stored just to the left of the entrance to the
Gardens. Drive through the entrance, pay the admission fee or flash
the Members Badge, then immediately turn left. Parking is available
near the shells.
Shells
We have an eight, four, and various other VBRC boats at our
disposal such as a quad, double, pair, and single.
